Week of Oct. 23-27

Dear Prek Parents,
Thank you all for coming in last Friday for the Parent-Teacher conferences. It is wonderful to work with such a dedicated group of parents and students.

Reminders:
·        Every Tuesday Homework is send home. Homework should be back to school on Thursday. Please don’t forget to send the folder back

·        On Tuesdays with the homework we will send a bag in which you will have to bring something to school that begins with the letter of the week. This is to help us with our letter of the week manipulative center.

·        Please make sure your child is only bringing toys of the letter of the week we are studying. We have been receiving children with toys that do not belong to the letter.

This week we will continue learning about our abc. We will be working on recognizing the letters with their sound, letter formation, vocabulary of the letter, remember always emphasizing on the short vowel sounds. This week we will be studying about the letter Hh. The vocabulary for this letter is: heart, hair, helicopter, hippo, hammer, horse, hamburger, hat, hero, hot dog, hands

Two children will be assigned each week with each letter. In this case, the children assigned should take at least five (5) items that they have at home that begin with this letter. Items should be at school on Monday and we will send them back on Friday. For this week we have Angie (Prek”A”) and Paula (Prek”B”)
.
***Note: On Wednesday, the assigned students, will have to share for 22 friends eatable things such as hot dog, ham, hummus, hamburger, hashbrowns, hersheys, Hawaiian punch,  letter Hh cookies, etc. for children to taste. We do this to close our letter unit.

The following link you will find a PowerPoint presentation with the vocabulary, in case you would like to review at home with your child.

On Thursday, October 26th, we will have a Hat Day. Your child should go to school wearing a hat.

We are attaching links of some of Letter Hh videos if you would like to listen and sing at home with your kid:

We would like your support on occasionally review the ABC’s letter names and sound. Here are some songs we use in class every day.

Some of the stories we will be reading this week are:
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson is a classic children's book first published in 1955 that features a calm, upbeat but mostly silent little boy who creates his surroundings with his ever-present purple crayon. He makes up his own fun, and even gets scared by some of his drawings: He's chased by a dragon he draws, he falls of a mountain he draws, he has to draw a boat to save himself from drowning in the sea he accidentally draws. Successive generations have enjoyed Harold's inventive adventures. Harold and the Purple Crayon is a wonderful celebration of imagination and independent play that also has been adapted for an animated HBO Family TV series and is available as an app.

Building a House by Byron Barton uses simple text and clear, simple images to show the process of house building from the ground up. For kids fascinated with construction {and even those that aren’t} it is sure to please.

In math, will be working with numbers. We will work on how to represent and recognize numbers using tally marks, ten frames, name of the number, one-to-one correspondence. We will begin working this week with numbers 0-9. We will also be working on sorting items that are big, medium and small.

We would like your support on occasionally review counting and numbers. Here are some songs we use in class every day:

Our Nursery Rhyme this week is: “Hickory Dickory Dock”
We are attaching you the link of the videos of this song we will be learning throughout the week. We will learn two versions of this nursery rhyme. Just a little tip to have fun at home listening and acting out our song.

In our Social Studies unit we will be talking about Children Around the World. We will be learning about Colombia. Students will get to know the flag, map, traditional dressing, food, drinks, traditional games, money, national animal and national flower and many more things that have to do with the country. If you have any poster or any other material that you are willing to share with the class, we would appreciate if you will let us borrow them from you.
